The Unity School Media Center houses both the Library and a state-of-the-art Computer Lab. This arrangement allows students and teachers flexibility in using the traditional library as well as the computer lab for library classes, story times and research projects.
Technology is integrated into everyday teaching and learning activities as a tool to solve problems, to research subject matter, and to communicate information. Each grade level utilizes technology in a unique manner appropriate to the student’s developmental stage. In the educational environment, it is important to ensure that technology is used appropriately and in the most beneficial manner for our students.
The computer lab in the Media Center is primarily used by the lower school students. The lab consists of an interactive whiteboard and 25 networked workstations. The objective of the department is to ensure that all students acquire the essential skills to utilize technology effectively prior to entering Middle School where they have access to a dedicated Middle School Computer lab and are offered more advanced technological electives such as web design and Publisher. In addition to regularly scheduled technology classes, the students also use the computer lab to enhance all subject areas. On a weekly basis, Discovery Day offers a unique opportunity to integrate educational technology with the Science and Social Studies curriculum. Students also use a web-based writing tool to assist with the writing process by providing instant scoring and feedback.
As technology continues to transform our society, we strive to enrich our students with the most recent tools and resources to assist them during this information age.
The library supports both the educational and recreational reading needs of the school community. Students in grades Kindergarten through Fifth Grade have library classes once a week. Students in Middle School can visit the library whenever needed. The library maintains an open and flexible schedule, allowing teachers the opportunity to reserve extra library or computer lab time for research projects.
Currently, there are over 23,000 books and multimedia items in the library’s circulating collection including a Parent Resource Collection.
Scholastic’s Reading Counts, a reading motivational program, is part of the curriculum that is implemented by the teachers and encouraged and coordinated by the Librarian. The program is based on reading comprehension and emphasizes the enjoyment of reading while continuing to challenge oneself to read.
Each year, in October, the Media Center & Library is converted into a book store for the annual Book Fair. This year’s Book Fair is scheduled for October 22nd – 29th and is themed “Here’s to Our Heroes, Reading Saves the Day!” It will include a super hero read by our Head and Assistant Heads of School as well as a morning event, Bagels with Dads, to give our fathers the opportunity to enjoy the book fair with their children.
