Unity School’s third annual Future Scientists and Engineers Conference was surely the event of the year! Students presented their science and engineering projects to family and friends and were excited to get feedback to help guide them in their continued research. The event was designed to give our students the opportunity to have their first conference experience, similar to how adults continue their education through learning from experts or peers in their fields of study.
The event was kicked off with keynote speaker Brian Brackeen from Kairos, Inc. Mr. Brackeen explained his journey from being a struggling student to using his work experience at IBM and Apple to start his own facial recognition software which has now expanded to include emotion and demographic recognition of almost 10 million faces monthly. All in attendance were enamored by Brian Brackeen?s presentation and where technology may lead us in the future. The event also highlighted the
extended efforts of our first STEAM exhibition led by Gemma Ward, Melissa Hassan and Eiki Martinson, an engineer in our local community. The Musical Swings exhibit was open to roughly 100 people who helped to identify whether music can truly bring a community together and help raise the overall well being of the participants of the exhibit. Students, parents, faculty and staff were invited to peruse the exhibit hall and attend mini sessions where students volunteered to share their research. Topics included: Rubik’s Cube Algorithms, Humidity and Hair, Charles’ Law, Glucose Levels in Foods, Physics of Friction Cars, and Right vs.
Left Brain Dominance and Grades! A special thank you to Mr. Saint-Laurent for his continued support and help with this event and to all of the faculty and staff who helped make this event a success. All efforts truly made this event one of a kind! -Melissa Hassan Middle School Math and Science Teacher
